Food science and aquaculture within a wider portfolio

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture, NIFA, announced on 23 September 2026 that it had awarded $20 million through the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programmes. Food Science and Nutrition accounts for 15 awards and Aquaculture for 11 in the ten-topic portfolio.

The other funded areas are forests and related resources; plant production and protection, in biology and engineering; animal production and protection; natural-resource management; rural and community development; biofuels and biobased products; and small and mid-size farms.

Competitive funding for agricultural research

NIFA describes SBIR/STTR as highly competitive programmes supporting research into important scientific problems and opportunities in agriculture that could produce significant public benefits.
