Support for integrated pest-management strategies

USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture announced nearly $500,000 for Louisiana State University Agricultural Center on 30 September 2026. The award supports the development of integrated pest-management strategies to mitigate the impact of invasive pasture mealybug, Heliococcus novovillei, in sugarcane in Louisiana and Florida.

An AFRI rapid-response programme

The award comes through NIFA’s Rapid Response to Emerging and Re-emerging Pest and Disease Events Across Food and Agricultural Systems programme. Funded through the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative, the programme supports rapid action and addresses knowledge and information gaps affecting food and agricultural supply chains.

In its announcement, NIFA highlights applied research and Extension outreach as ways to address emerging pest and disease events across the food and agricultural system.
