Six projects and their recipients
USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture, NIFA, announced on 30 September 2026 that it had awarded $1.8 million for six applied research projects supporting the U.S. aquaculture industry. The work aims to generate new science-based information and technology to address constraints facing the industry.
The listed recipients are the University of Washington, the University of Maine, Mississippi State University, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Michigan State University and Pacific Hybreed.
Profitability, food security and markets
NIFA says the projects aim to improve industry profitability, reduce the U.S. seafood trade deficit, increase domestic food security, expand markets for U.S.-produced products and provide more jobs in rural and coastal America. The announcement puts the seafood trade deficit at $17 billion.
