Two types of support for food-animal veterinary care
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture, NIFA, announced on 7 October 2026 that it had awarded $8.2 million through the Veterinary Services Grant Program. The 34 awards aim to mitigate shortages of food-animal veterinarians by supporting rural clinics and education and training for veterinarians, veterinary students and veterinary technicians.
Education and rural practice capacity
Sixteen Education, Extension and Training awards support specialised skills and practices by expanding educational programmes at American Veterinary Medical Association-accredited schools and professional organisations.
The 18 Rural Practice Enhancement awards provide up to $200,000 for equipment purchases, clinic staffing and operations to enhance food-animal veterinary services in designated shortage areas. The announcement identifies the recipients of both award types for fiscal year 2026.
