Support for two weather-response projects
USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture, NIFA, announced on 2 September 2026 that it had awarded nearly $600,000 for two projects addressing drought in Florida and flooding in Hawaii. The announcement names the University of Florida and the University of Hawaii as awardees.
Applied research and agricultural outreach
The awards come through the Rapid Response to Weather Events Across Food and Agriculture Systems programme, funded through the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative. NIFA describes applied research and Extension work as ways to alleviate the impacts of weather events and disasters across food and agricultural systems.
The programme aims to deploy strategies rapidly and fill knowledge and information gaps to protect food and agricultural supply chains, from production through consumption, during and after weather events and disasters.
